American University is a private university in Washington, DC, especially known for international affairs, politics, communications, and public service.

Academically, AU is especially well known for international affairs, political science, communications, public affairs, and social-impact oriented fields. Its Washington, DC, setting is not a backdrop but a core academic advantage.

Students often choose AU because they want their college years to connect directly to internships, policy work, advocacy, nonprofit experience, and government or think-tank exposure. The line between classroom and city is unusually thin here.

The campus culture tends to be politically aware, internationally minded, and socially engaged. It appeals to students who enjoy discussion, current events, debate, and thinking about how ideas translate into institutions and action.

American is often strongest for students with a clear interest in public-facing work and who are excited by Washington itself. Students seeking a more insulated or traditional college-town environment may find the DC-centered atmosphere less natural.

Great for students interested in policy, advocacy, diplomacy, internships in DC, and socially engaged learning.
