KFUPM - King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals is one of Saudi Arabia’s leading technical research universities and one of the most influential institutions in the Middle East in engineering, energy, geosciences, computing, and business education. Located in Dhahran, KFUPM is especially known for its strong orientation toward engineering, applied science, innovation, and industry-linked education.
KFUPM was established in 1963 as the College of Petroleum and Minerals, began instruction in 1965, and was later renamed King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in 1975. Its development has been closely tied to Saudi Arabia’s industrialization, energy sector growth, and long-term demand for high-level technical and managerial talent.
As one of Saudi Arabia’s most prominent technical universities, KFUPM has educated many influential figures in energy, engineering, technology, finance, and public administration. Its graduates have played important roles in the Kingdom’s oil industry, infrastructure development, digital transformation, and corporate leadership.
KFUPM is particularly strong in petroleum engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, data science, geology, geophysics, materials science, energy engineering, business analytics, and business administration. Its academic identity is closely linked to engineering science, energy industries, digital technologies, and future-oriented professional training.
According to the university’s official Colleges & Departments page, KFUPM currently consists of seven specialized colleges. These colleges support a broad academic structure across engineering, computing, business, design, and applied sciences, and are integrated with research centers, innovation platforms, and collaborative initiatives.
KFUPM stands out for its strong industry orientation, English-medium academic environment, and close alignment with Saudi Arabia’s national development priorities. The university explicitly states that its courses, research, and publications are conducted in English. Its campus visit page also emphasizes that the programs are taught exclusively in English and are designed to prepare graduates for emerging industries with regional and global impact.
KFUPM is open to both undergraduate and graduate international applicants. Its international students page states that the university currently represents more than 75 nationalities. For undergraduate admissions, international applicants may apply through the SAT track, and the official admissions platform lists a minimum SAT score of 1350 for that route, although meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission. For students living outside Saudi Arabia, the university states that tuition is waived and a full scholarship is provided, with benefits that may include on-campus housing and textbook support. At the graduate level, some official master’s admissions pages list common requirements such as a recognized bachelor’s degree, GPA of 2.5/4.0 or above, IELTS 6.0+ or TOEFL 70+, recommendation letters, and a statement of purpose.
