Founded in 1874, Rose-Hulman is a long-established technological institution with a strong tradition in STEM education. Over the years, it has developed a reputation for being a small but highly focused college centered on engineering, science, mathematics, and computing.
Although its alumni network is smaller than that of large comprehensive universities, Rose-Hulman has had a strong influence in engineering and technology. Notable alumni highlighted by the institution include Bernard Vonderschmitt, co-founder of Xilinx, and Frederick Garry, who received the National Medal of Technology for innovations in jet engine technology. The university also emphasizes that its graduates have been active in innovation, industry, and public service.
Rose-Hulman’s academic strengths are clearly concentrated in engineering, computing, mathematics, and the sciences. Its undergraduate majors include Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Design, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, and Mathematics, among others.
Engineering is the institution’s strongest overall area. Official outcomes data show exceptionally strong placement rates for majors such as civil engineering, computer engineering, engineering design, and mechanical engineering, reflecting the university’s strong professional preparation and industry relevance.
Rose-Hulman offers pathways in Computer Science and Software Engineering, and its official academic pages also highlight areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data science. This makes it especially appealing to students interested in both foundational computing and emerging technology fields.
Although Rose-Hulman is best known for engineering, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and other foundational sciences are also central to its undergraduate education. This broad STEM foundation distinguishes it from institutions that are more narrowly career-oriented.
Rose-Hulman does not follow the large, highly segmented structure of a comprehensive university. Instead, it is organized around a compact STEM-focused academic model. According to the official Fast Facts page, the university has 12 academic departments, and its undergraduate structure emphasizes interdisciplinary learning and hands-on practice.
Overall, Rose-Hulman is best understood as a small elite technological college devoted primarily to undergraduate engineering and science education, rather than as a broad multi-disciplinary university.
With 99% of students enrolled at the undergraduate level, Rose-Hulman is deeply focused on undergraduate teaching. Its resource allocation, classroom experience, and faculty interaction are all strongly centered on bachelor’s students. The university also reports a 1:11 student-faculty ratio and an average class size of 20 students.
One of Rose-Hulman’s most distinctive strengths is its strong career preparation. According to official Fast Facts, 95% of graduates are employed or enrolled in graduate school within six months of graduation, the average starting salary is $82,005, and 94% of students complete at least one internship.
Rose-Hulman’s campus culture is strongly centered on science, engineering, mathematics, computing, and innovation. Its curriculum, student organizations, and career pathways are all heavily shaped by a technical and problem-solving mindset.
Rose-Hulman is not as ultra-selective as institutions like Cooper Union, but its admissions standards remain strong. According to the 2024–2025 Common Data Set, the university received 6,097 first-year applications for Fall 2024 and admitted 4,686 students, resulting in an acceptance rate of approximately 76.9%. At the same time, the average high school GPA of admitted students was 3.83, indicating that enrolled students are still academically well prepared.
According to the university’s official admissions page, the undergraduate application cycle typically opens on August 1, with Early Action due on November 1, Regular Decision due on February 1, and the enrollment deposit deadline on May 1.
Rose-Hulman also states that standardized test scores are not required. However, academic preparation is important. Applicants are encouraged to complete four years of mathematics, including at least precalculus or trigonometry, four years of English, and one year each of laboratory-based biology, chemistry, and physics.
In terms of cost, the official Tuition & Fees page lists tuition and fees for the 2025–2026 academic year at $58,200, with housing and food estimated at $17,427. First-year students also pay a one-time laptop fee of $2,650.
Overall, Rose-Hulman is especially well suited to students who have a clear interest in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or related STEM fields; who want rigorous undergraduate training, small classes, and strong career support; and who value teaching quality and outcomes more than the broad reputation of a large comprehensive university.
