The University of Connecticut (UConn), founded in 1881, is the flagship public research university of the State of Connecticut. Its main campus is located in Storrs, and the university has grown from its agricultural origins into one of the leading public universities in the United States. UConn traces its beginning to the founding of Storrs Agricultural School, which later evolved into the modern University of Connecticut.

UConn is recognized as a major public research institution and holds the rare distinction of being a land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant university. It is also classified as a Carnegie R1 institution, reflecting the highest level of research activity. This combination highlights UConn’s strong commitment to teaching, innovation, public service, and statewide impact.

In addition to its flagship campus in Storrs, UConn serves students across Connecticut through four regional campuses in Avery Point, Hartford, Stamford, and Waterbury. The university also includes UConn Health in Farmington, home to its Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine, graduate health programs, clinical services, and hospital operations. This multi-campus structure allows UConn to provide both broad access and a unified academic identity across the state.

According to UConn’s official fact sheet, the university includes 14 schools and colleges and offers more than 125 undergraduate majors across a wide range of academic disciplines. Undergraduate students can pursue degrees such as the B.A., B.S., B.F.A., B.Mus., B.S.E., and B.S.W., with options for minors, interdisciplinary study, and individualized programs. This breadth gives students the flexibility to explore traditional academic fields as well as emerging areas of study.

UConn is particularly well regarded in areas such as engineering, business, nursing, pharmacy, education, agriculture, health sciences, and the liberal arts and sciences. Its academic environment combines rigorous coursework, faculty-led research, experiential learning, and access to statewide professional networks, helping students prepare for graduate education and a broad range of careers.

The university is also known for its vibrant campus life, strong sense of community, and nationally recognized athletics tradition. UConn’s teams, known as the Huskies, are a major part of campus identity and school spirit. With a combination of academic strength, public mission, research excellence, and a dynamic student experience, UConn continues to be one of the most influential public universities in the Northeast and across the nation.
