The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is one of Hong Kong’s leading research universities, known for its collegiate system, strong undergraduate education, and balanced academic strengths across the humanities, business, medicine, engineering, and science. It is widely regarded as a comprehensive university that integrates both Eastern and Western academic traditions.
Established in 1963, CUHK was formed through the merger of Chung Chi College, New Asia College, and United College. It is the second oldest university in Hong Kong and has maintained a strong emphasis on liberal education and cultural integration since its founding.
CUHK has a broad and influential alumni network, with graduates active in academia, business, finance, technology, public service, and the cultural sector. Its alumni presence is particularly strong in Hong Kong and Greater China, reflecting its role in nurturing well-rounded professionals.
CUHK offers strong academic performance across a wide range of disciplines. Key strengths include humanities and social sciences, business, medicine, engineering, and data-related fields. Its medical faculty is highly regarded in Asia, while its business school and engineering programs are also competitive internationally.
CUHK operates under a unique combination of a faculty system and a collegiate system. It includes faculties such as Arts, Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Science, and Social Science, alongside its colleges, which provide residential life and additional learning support.
One of CUHK’s defining characteristics is its collegiate system, which emphasizes whole-person education, community living, and close faculty-student interaction. Its campus, located in the New Territories, offers a more spacious and traditional university environment compared to urban campuses. CUHK is also known for its strong research output and international collaborations.
CUHK undergraduate admissions are based primarily on academic performance, along with other factors such as personal statements, references, interviews, and additional submitted materials. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission, and some programmes may include additional assessments.
CUHK is an excellent choice for students seeking a top-tier university with strong academics, a unique collegiate system, and a well-rounded undergraduate experience. It is particularly suitable for those interested in humanities, business, medicine, engineering, or data-related fields, and for students aiming to study in Hong Kong or pursue international careers.
