International Biology Olympiad (IBO)
International Biology Olympiad (IBO) is one of the most prestigious international biology competitions for high school students. Established in 1990, it is held annually and brings together top young biology students from over 70 countries. Each participating country or region selects a team—typically four students—through rigorous national-level competitions. The contest consists of both theoretical exams and practical laboratory tests, covering a wide range of topics such as molecular biology, genetics, ecology, physiology, and systematics. These challenges require deep understanding, analytical thinking, and strong experimental skills. Based on performance, participants are awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals, as well as honorable mentions, representing one of the highest levels of pre-university achievement in biology worldwide.
History and Significance
The IBO is widely regarded as the pinnacle of high school biology competitions. Participation reflects exceptional academic ability, dedication, and extensive training. Many former participants and medalists have gone on to make significant contributions in biology, medicine, and life sciences.
