Simons Summer Research Program
Simons Summer Research Program is a highly selective high school research program hosted by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), focusing on hands-on laboratory research in the life sciences.Supported by mathematician and philanthropist James Simons, the program is based at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, one of the world’s leading biomedical research institutions. It offers students the opportunity to conduct real research in professional laboratory settings.
Program Structure
- Typically a 6–8 week full-time summer research program
- Students work in real labs under the guidance of PIs, postdocs, or research scientists
- Research areas include molecular biology, genetics, neuroscience, and cancer biology
- Students complete a final research paper and presentation
Research Characteristics
- Authentic wet-lab and data-driven research
- Emphasis on experimental design, data analysis, and scientific writing
- May result in posters or publication-level work
- Fully immersive laboratory experience
Academic Value
Provides one of the closest experiences to a university-level research assistant role for high school students, emphasizing independence, critical thinking, and experimental skills.
Impact on College Applications
Highly valuable for biomedical sciences, life sciences, and pre-med/STEM applicants. Participation in real lab research with tangible outcomes significantly strengthens applications to top universities such as MIT, Harvard, and Stanford.
