Osaka University (officially styled in English on the university website as The University of Osaka, or UOsaka) is one of Japan’s leading comprehensive research universities and a major member of the former imperial university system. History
Osaka University was officially established in 1931 as Osaka Imperial University, the sixth of Japan’s imperial universities. According to university-related historical materials, its intellectual traditions also trace back to the Edo-period institutions Kaitokudo (1724) and Tekijuku (1838), which helped shape its humanities and scientific heritage. In 2007, Osaka University of Foreign Studies was merged into Osaka University, significantly expanding its strength in languages and international studies.
