Overview
Institut Polytechnique de Paris (IP Paris) is one of France’s leading science and engineering university groupings and one of the most internationally competitive institutions in the French grandes écoles landscape. Located within the Paris-Saclay innovation and research cluster, IP Paris is especially strong in engineering, mathematics, computer science, data science, physics, economics, artificial intelligence, communications, energy, transport, and advanced technology fields.
History
IP Paris was officially established in 2019 as part of France’s effort to build world-class higher education and research institutions. It was initially created by bringing together five prestigious engineering schools. In July 2024, École nationale des ponts et chaussées joined the institute, expanding IP Paris into a six-school structure and strengthening its academic and research profile.
Notable Alumni
Because IP Paris is built around several historic and highly selective French engineering schools, its broader alumni and academic network includes many influential scientists, engineers, senior executives, policymakers, and innovators in France and internationally. Member schools such as École Polytechnique have long played a major role in French public administration, scientific research, industrial development, finance, and technology leadership.
Strong Academic Fields
IP Paris is particularly strong in mathematics, physics, computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, electronics and telecommunications, mechanical engineering, energy engineering, civil and infrastructure engineering, transport systems, economics, statistics, financial engineering, and advanced science-and-technology related disciplines. Its overall academic profile is defined by strong quantitative training, research intensity, and close links between engineering science and real-world application.
Academic Structure
IP Paris currently consists of six member schools: École Polytechnique, ENSTA Paris, ENSAE Paris, Télécom Paris, Télécom SudParis, and École nationale des ponts et chaussées. The institute develops graduate education, doctoral training, and research activities through these schools, while also operating within the wider Paris-Saclay ecosystem alongside major research organizations and partners.
Distinctive Features
IP Paris stands out for its combined model of elite engineering schools, world-class research infrastructure, and a strong innovation-and-entrepreneurship environment. From its creation, the institute explicitly aimed to become a world-class science and technology institution. It is deeply connected to the Saclay Plateau campus ecosystem and emphasizes advanced research, technology transfer, interdisciplinary collaboration, and industry engagement. Its member schools are known for very selective admissions, rigorous quantitative education, and strong international and professional exposure.
Admissions
Admission to IP Paris-related programs is highly competitive. From its establishment, the institute offered master’s and PhD programs, while its member schools continue to run highly selective engineering, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral pathways. For example, École Polytechnique offers bachelor’s, engineering, master’s, and PhD options, with strong emphasis on research, international mobility, and internship-based learning. Admissions requirements vary significantly across schools and programs, but they generally place strong weight on academic excellence, quantitative preparation, language proficiency, and research or professional potential.
